I have been teaching English for over 3 years now. What I found out over these years is that students who study on their own regularly everyday show the most improvement. But those who only study during the three or hours a week with me, show the least improvement. Being exposed to an English environment is the fastest and the most efficient way to learn English. I believe if I can take one of my students and separate him or her from all the Koreans and put him in an only English speaking environment, that student would become fluent in English within 2 months. Human brain is already wired to learn a language. It is like singing. If you expose yourself to a style of music and only that kind of music, not only will you learn that music and reproduce it but you will also compose new variations of that music. When we were babies we didn't learn grammar to speak. We listened and modeled our parents. Most of Koreans who know thousands of vocabulary and whose grammar knowledge is above that of an average native speaker has difficulty uttering a simple sentence. Why is this? To explain this by an analogy, let me give you an example in terms of learning music. That person all his life learned the notes and the theories of music but never really enjoyed singing or playing an instrument. To continue with this analogy, this is my real goal: to take my students to a place where they will sing and learn many new songs. Let's keep in mind that singing is fun.
